Psychometric Properties of the Ruminative Response Scale

Psychometric Properties of the Ruminative Response Scale

Overview

The Ruminative Responses Scale (RRS) is a scale derived from a 71-item questionnaire called the Response Styles Questionnaire (RSQ), to measure ruminative tendencies in individuals. The RRS includes 22 items describing responses to depressed mood concerning the self, symptoms, or possible consequences of one’s mood. After running a factor analysis using SPSS Statistics, we found it broke the shortened scale up into three categories instead of two. The items did not correctly factor analyze into the reflection and brooding subscales and a third factor emerged as writing. When reviewing other research using the shortened RRS, there is no mention of this concern. Our purpose in conducting this research is to gain insight into the cause of this inconsistency.

Approach

An 8-minute online survey assessed participants’ general reflection and brooding patterns. Participants were asked to indicate which, if any, chronic illnesses they have to test our hypothesis that the RRS isn’t accurate in participants with diabetes or other chronic illness in general.
